Project Description

This project included complete demolition and renovation of an existing laboratory/Office building, with all the work to be completed on a compressed four-month schedule. NSMC participated with CM BOVIS LEND LEASE in the principal’s Council to create a safe incident and injury-free job site. Principals from each major subcontractor met monthly to conduct tours, inspections and gather worker feedback from the various trades in an open, non-threatening forum that could identify and resolve any potential safety issues before any incidents could occur. This ongoing best practice helped maintain a safe job site despite the tight construction schedule and difficult coordination among the subcontractor firms.

AstraZeneca M & N Project, Waltham, MA

Our Projects

Award Contract

$2,400,000

General Contractor

The Richmond Group
Hopkinton, MA

Engineer

R. G. Vanderweil Engineers, Inc.
Boston, MA

Architect

William Wilson Architects & Associates
Boston, MA

Project Description

This project for global leader AstraZeneca included two mirror image 20,000 sq. ft. 5 story buildings with 28,000 sq. ft. of laboratory space. NSMC’s scope of work included process utility piping, specialty laboratory waste collection, and plumbing.

This project was a new construction attached to an existing, functioning R&D facility. Services were integrated from the existing facility, as was the design element of low, exposed ceilings. The height restriction and small workspace required that all piping be laid out prior to installation. Planning and coordination were key elements to the project’s success, which included the use of imported materials. A significant challenge was that it was a “work and not be seen” work site. NSMC had to work closely with the client to avoid service interruption. Furthermore, additional attention had to be paid to the functioning lab area, as to not affect “in process” laboratory work.

Features

  • Specialty gas systems (Argon & Helium)
  • Laboratory plumbing fixtures
  • Emergency showers and eyewashes
  • Laboratory waste and vent system
  • Domestic, protected and tempered water distribution
  • Compressed air system and distribution
  • Sanitary and storm waste systems
